Paint scraping off hood

I got a junkyard hood for my 78 F250 and I'm sanding it down to prep for priming and painting, but the paint keeps coming off in chips. I can take a scraper and keep working away at getting pieces of it to come up.

Should I continue with the scraper or is there some kind of thinner spray I can use to speed up the process for prepping?

Thanks!

there are a variety of paint strippers.....aviation grade typically works best but take a visit to you local auto paint supplier, they should have what you need

The thing with paint stripper is if any body work has been done to the body panel ie: filler/bondo and the stripper hits it you will have to REMOVE ALL filler or anything you put over it (filler/primer/paint) will lift.
Same if ANY stripper is left behind it will lift anything put over it.

Not knowing what equipment you have and seeing the hood in person but I think a DA sander with 36 grit paper followed by 40, 80, 120 & 220.
Or maybe start with 40 grit, 80, 120, and 220.

You do not need to take it down to metal just to a solid base. It looks like the hood was white at 1 time and looks to be solid so you would only need to get to the solid white base.

What is the under side like?
Before you get to crazy on the topside de-grease the under side and before doing any sanding on the top hit it with a de-greaser/waxer.

I don't think there was any filler in it. Junkyard hood and judging by the body of the donor truck, no one cared about making it look good.

I started with 80 grit, but might step it down to 40.

The underside was rusted a little, but I took an angle grinder and wire brush to it and cleared all that up. I still need to degrease, though. Thanks!

The new paint will only be as good as the layers underneath. In this case it would be eccessential to take 80 grit right down to bare metal then start with the actual body work, primers, sealers, then good topcoats.
