Rerouting speed sensor

First off, im assuming this is the speed sensor. If I'm wrong, please forgive me. I'm in the middle of installing my new exhaust on my '79 F100 with a 351M and auto trans. Yes I'm building it myself and no I don't own a welder. The pictures are the driver side "S" bend collector extension. No matter how I rotate it, the pipe is still touching the wire for the sensor. At least this way it's as far away from the fuel line as possible. I'm thinking of routing the wire under the tubing, but I'm afraid it'll be too short. If I unbolt it from the trans, will it leak massive amounts of fluid? Anybody does this before or have any suggestions?

1st: wire touching exhaust

2nd: angle of sensor pointed at exhaust

3rd: exhaust clearance over crossmember

4th: exhaust clearance to trans

That looks more like the speedometer cable.

That is the speedometer cable....and if removed it won't leak "massive amounts" of trans blood. You should have enough cable to route it under the pipe and tie it to the crossmember.

As stated that is the trans cable you cannot run it under the exhaust it needs to be away from the exhaust or it will melt the outer sheath.
Additionally I would consider a heat shield between the exhaust and the floor pan you are pretty close to it and the transmission, no need to induce additional heat in to the trans.

I would move the pipe to the left and down some

Here's what I hope is the final fix. I unbolt the gear from the trans and ran it under the exhaust. When i removed the gear, ZERO trans fluid leaked out. Not complaining, just a little concerned now. Any who, got some tiedowns from oreillys and used an existing hole in the trans crossmember. I hope the space is enough to keep it from melting the cable.

That should be fine. Hope you have at least an 1" between the exhaust and floor pan as the exhaust is not static and will torque with the driveline. Just make you have the clearance.

Your doing good. I recently replaced my speed-o cable (they were not too expensive.. Amazon, Advance Auto and rockauto all had good prices) 1977 F250 4x4

My new cable rubbed on my exhaust pipe after a few miles..it quickly melted the wrapping, thus locking up the cable.. The speedo on dash was dead.. The weak link in the cable is near the fitting to prevent damage to trans.

Anyway, the story is try to keep the cable away from heat.

Good luck.

I think the fluid level in the trans is well below the speedo cable hole. The speedo gears are plastic against plastic, so 'drip' or 'splash' oiling is OK for them.
Not a bad routing, although you might look into adding a heatshield between the cable and exhaust too.
Or if that's a stamped sheetmetal cross member, you might could drill a hole in it just large enough to route the cable down through it, keeping the cable even further from the pipe.

It sounds like the members have gotten you past the speedometer cable dilemma. Here's a related comment for your project. If you find a talented tube bender with the proper machine, he can mandrel bend up some stainless tubing for you generally up to 3" diameter. This could be helpful if you plan on going over the rear axle. The pipes furthest from the engine seem to corrode the most.
