Hey y'all, I've got a 97 f150, single cab standard, 4.6 engine. I've been thinking about doing a 4wd conversion. How easy or difficult would it be ? Someone told me I would have to put at least a 6inch lift just to make it possible. Or how would a locker rear end compare?
Easy question first: A locking rear axle vs. 4wd. Winner: 4WD. Lockers are great, but power at both ends is what you might could need in many, many situations.
4x2 to 4x4 conversion: This is a "If you have to ask....." situation. If you have to ask, it's going to be a very difficult proposition. You don't need a lift kit, but you need pretty much an entire donor truck to make this happen. In some models there are frame differences. Not sure about yours, but you will find that out.
Usually the smart money is to sell your running, driving truck and buy a running, driving factory 4x4.
here is the thing, had you gotten the truck and it was new and expensive and you wanted 4wd when you had 2, its a thing to entertain the work as a measure of cost avoidance. problem with the OBS and first gen post OBS trucks, they are so long out of print now that the used ones are nearly valueless and its cheaper in the long and short run to just go get the one you want and sell the other, scrap it, part it, demo derby it - whatever
