i have a 1997 f-150 supercab xlt 2 wheel drive that i would like to convert to 4x4 as close to as it would come from the factory. is this possible? if so how much? and how long would it take. thanks for any ideas that you might have. also places to get the parts thanks.
What is the purpose of doing the conversion? If you are disappointed with the lack of traction try putting a locker in the rearend. You will be suprised how well a locker 2wd performs. Also alot cheaper than a 4wd conversion. Do a search for your question, this has been discussed on this board before. Good luck!
A 4wd conversion will by far move you farther than a 2wd with a locker will. In your new style i'm not sure how easy it is to do, with the 96 and newer style it was a piece of cake,,,you should be able to do it though, probably your best bet would be to try to find a truck in a junkyard that was in a rear end collision. Otherwise buying new parts will most likely add up rather quickly. Good luck.
i dont see the purpose in a 2wd to 4wd conversion unless your just that attached to the truck or unless your going to do a front axle conversion, its easier to do front axle conversion/4wd conversion on a 2wd than 4wd truck. but other than that i dont see why you dont just sell the truck for a 4wd. my 2 cents.

More like; a 4wd conversion will just get you STUCK further down the trail than a 2wd w/a locker.
Get a air locker for the rear, a 2WD lift kit, a couple cases of beer from the dough you saved and pocket the rest to put it towards the real thing later down the road.
