Ive got a 92 Bronco with a 302 thats been giving me some erradic temp readings according to the gauge...pretty much always on the hot side. Warms up and drives fine but the temp gauge has always read a little north of the middle of the range. Sometimes it'll jump to the "L" on the Normal range or even higher and just hang out there. I have a thermal gun that i ise to take a direct reading at the thermostat...its usually between 185 and 200...truck has a 195 thermostat.
Im thinking the sending unit is bad, but never dealt with one. Any thoughts?
It's possible the sending unit is bad or has a bad connection, could also be that ther eis air int he system or a head gasket is failing. The sender is a small single wire device about the size of a dime right beside the #5 injector in the lower intake, the wire pushes on over stud on the top of the sender. If you replace it go easy on the thread sealer as the sender must ground through the intake, also check the ground connection to the lower intake on the rear intake bolt back near the firewall.
