I have a '93 F-150 with the 5.0, my problem is that the temp. guage is constantly moving up and down. It's not the slow movement that you would normally see when the thermostat opens, but a constant erratic movement from the "cold" to just into the normal range. It was a lot worse before, but that was due to a bad connection on the sending unit. I fixed that and thought the problem would go away, but it's still doing it to a lesser degree. Anybody have any ideas?
My guage does the same thing. I have suspected the thermostat.
There was a thread on this in the last week or two.
One post said he fixed it with a good quality thermostat.
It may be the sending unit. Try shorting the wire on the sending unit. If it pegs the gauge, then the gauge is good. If not, replace the sending unit to start with.
Where is the sending unit exactly for the temperature gauge...? Id like to replace mine because my gauge isnt working, dont know what else it could be.
I did in my 94 Aerostar. After this very same issue driving me nuts for about 8-9 months ( after changing out the original equipment Motorcraft thermostat ), I thought I would try a Motorcraft replacment thermostat, (as I had put in 2-3 thermostats of different makes and changed the temp gauge sending unit)
The Motorcraft thermostat cured my problem immediately. So now I only use Motorcraft thermostats in my Fords.
Not saying this will cure your problem, but it did mine.
