I just got a 1979 f150 with a 460 c6 2wd. It's stuck in a forward gear. You can 'feel' the detects when you shift the lever, but stays in forward. The parking pawls in park work. Something come apart inside? Think it's an easy fix?
So i finally got back to this truck. It automatically shifts through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd just fine. But in neutral, reverse, and park, it's still in drive gear. Parking pawls hold truck, but still trying to go forward. External linkages were tight, and you can feel the detents. Pulled pan off, and everything seems to be hooked up and connected. I am now assuming something with valve body. Is there a 'test' for the valve body?
I think you still have a linkage issue. The truck is stuck in Drive. The shaft that actuates the shift change sounds like it is broken inside the tranny.

The shift shaft operates the shaft inside the valve body, which it still does. Can move shift lever back and forth, and valve shaft inside body moves with it. That's why I'm thinking it must be the valve body, just that i don't know much about auto transmissions
Yer forward clutch pack has failed and is staying on creating the forward only situation. That trans will need tearing down. My guess is the clutches are welded together from overheating in the forward clutch drum/pack.

Ok. That makes sense. Oil was nice and red, but there was a fair amount of black sludge on bottom of pan. P/O very well may have tried a oil change. At any rate, I found a decent used trans that I'm gonna throw in for now. I will get the original rebuilt, and have ready for when the real restoration starts.

That's my guess, too. And I'm fairly certain we are right!
The fwd clutch seized will also cause a lockup condition in reverse as you will in effect have the fwd, low reverse, and reverse high clutches engaged. Going into reverse will feel like park as long as the engine is running.
