It sounds to me like there is a connection or ground issue. Start by tracing the wire to the connector to the rear underside of the truck bed. Pull the plug apart and check for dirt or corrosion. If that checks out, then continue to trace the wire to the ground connector and verify that it is clean and tight. Also check for breaks in the wire while tracing the harness.
