Has anyone here attempted an external fuel pump mod with their v10. any reason why this shouldnt work?
i have a 2000 X. ive been hunting down some sort of issue that 3 times now have lead to dropping the tank. At this point i'm really sick of that and want to maybe future proof the fuel system a bit with a beefer pre-pump inline fuel filter instead of those silly socks as well as an easily replaced fuel pump, maybe something a little bigger and stronger than the stock ford pump.
Maybe I'm just asking for trouble. I know this will probably offend the purists. lol
If I'm going to have to wrench on this thing every few weeks anyway, i'd like to at least make some of these parts more accessible.
1) to many LPH pump will over run the fuel pressure regulator. In other words pressure will be too high at idle and too high at WOT causing problems. Expecially in open loop conditions. Oem pump is about 120 lph or so. I installed a 200 lph pump at 14 VDC in my supercharged V10 and the regulator works fine. Much more than that could cause issues.
2) pump would have to pull fuel thru oem pump or drop tank and mod a new inlet.
3) amp rating of new "beefier" pump will need to work with existing wiring or rewire with larger wire and fuses and relays.
4) external pumps tend to be much Louder than in tank pumps and could be annoying. Not to mention you will probably feel the vibration in the seat of your pants.
This is great information. i'll need to really think on this. I love this truck, at 250K miles and 17 years of age ive come to the conclusion that there is pretty much no trade in/resell value to her and i should just make it easier/more comfortable for me. i dont want to dump a ton of money into it but want it to just run reliably and if i can score a few mpg along the way, thats a bonus. I was looking at guzzlers mods, i think this is in the right direction of what I'm trying to do. i just wasnt sure if there was a major difference between gas and diesel when it came to pressure, etc. I have a few ideas via brackets to possible reduce the vibration of the pump. maybe I can come up with some sort of heat sink to dissipate the heat and prolong the life of the pump.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I’m curious if you ever did the external fuel pump? I’m contemplating doing this myself.
I saw a thread where a guy cut a round hole in the floor, just above the pump and installed a trapdoor, so to speak. I thought about doing that myself, but chickened out at the last moment. It is definitely a good idea, especially if stranded in the wilderness somewhere.
I need to revisit this this winter, maybe.
Maybe build a hot wire kit like Racetronix makes and power the pump off the alternator.
Not sure what was causing your issues was it the harness?
Truthfully i havent dropped the tank yet on mine but i dont think they are baffled. You wont be able to run the tank past a 1/4 maybe 1/3 if youre using a external pump on a non baffled tank.

I've seen this done on a number of different suvs over the years. In some cases it's easier than draining and removing the tank.

Calm down, stand back take a deep breath drop the tank and replace the pump. Get a good quality part, a real Motorcraft replacement. Not a knock off. Make sure the the tank is clean. I've been where you are. Get the correct replacement and you won't have think about it for the next 200K miles.

Why do you think that?
A lot of diesel trucks out there don't have an in tank pump at all as the factory lift pump (or low pressure pump) was mechanical on the engine. Those trucks don't have an issue with using all the fuel in their non baffled tanks.
I've done a couple gas engine swaps (putting V8's in things they shouldn't be in) using external fuel pumps, all those ran until the needle was on empty.
If the OP is really concerned, there is a product that holley makes called HydraMat. That stuff keeps fuel going to the pump in autocross and other high lateral G force applications. It's not necessary in a truck unless you intent to do some serious corner carving or putting the truck a large angles off-road., but here's a link to it if interested.
I've had issues in the past with cutting up the bucket on venturi setups and running dual 255lph pumps when they ran low and fuel feeding issues. Just letting him know its a possiblity with problems.
