Add rear AC

Hi-I purchased an XLT 6.0 a few weeks ago. I didn't notice it does not have rear AC which I thought would be standard on a vehicle this size. I bought the vehicle without looking at it in person first because it was a good deal. My question is can I find salvage AC parts from an EX that has AC and add it? My kids are complaining it's too hot in the back. If I can do this, are there any threads/advise to check out? Or is there an aftermarket fan or AC unit for the rear. My husband thought it would be funny to add a roof type AC unit like you see on RVs. Thanks!

Find one in a junk yard local to you, and move all the parts over. I doubt there are threads on it. I haven't seen one yet.

I have only seen a few XLT that didn't have it and never a diesel. Have you looked for any of the components in the jack storage in the back? Seems more trouble than it's worth unless you have a full parts vehicle and time to do it. The freon lines all the way to the compressor, headliner, ducting, blower, heater lines to engine, heater core, rear evaporator, front and rear controls and their wiring would all need to swap over.

Yeah, I would think it would be cost prohibitive to make this work. As others have stated, for OEM style fitment, there are just too many pieces to try and source.

Here is what it looks like in the jack compartment. It was a custom ordered by the fire department for use in a wilderness area. It was the fire chiefs vehicle so there were a few strange mods like no rear seat and some interesting electrical work and several holes in the roof from various antennas. Again, don't really know what I am looking at here. I see a speaker and some unused wiring harness. Any of this look like AC stuff? I got a good deal on it and so far the ac is my only complaint.

Question

You probably have an "XL" in it's previous life it was most likely a government vehicle. Edit: I read your second post "Fire Dept"

Do you have carpeting or rubber/vinyl flooring?

Wow, the headliner doesn't even have vents for the AC...

I don't think it would be that bad with a donor vehicle. I wouldn't hesitate to tackle the transfer of parts. I've taken a few apart now at the scrap yard....and it ain't all that bad. If you have all the parts and bolts, it all fits together like a puzzle. Start with removing the headliner (move one over from the new vehicle), install ducting, put the "new" headliner in, then go to work on the components over the rear wheel well, then install the lines running under the truck to the engine bay. New headliner will have the rear controls you need...if not I have some. You can grab the over head console as well for over the front seats. All wiring will be there. You just have to find where they tied up the plugs.
