I am having to replace my Transmission and was wanting to know what other parts I should be looking at while the trans. is out to consider replacing? I want to make sure I take full advantage of this opportunity. Truck has 134,000 miles on it.
Thanks.
I am replacing the transmission because I started getting codes. The codes were P0751, P2700 which I understand is the bad one. I replaced some solenoids and that did not make any difference. The problems have continued to get worse the transmission is slipping now. The Ford place told me I needed to replace it and also a transmission shop that I trust. I just want to make sure while the transmission is out that I don't miss out on an opportunity to replace anything else that would be prudent to do at this time.
Thanks
Up pipes are MUCH easier with the transmission out. I did mine this past summer with the trans out and upgraded to BD diesel exhaust manifolds and up pipes.
Don't have someone local build it, if you have to replace the transmission, get yourself a Red Diamond Diesel transmission. David Ferguson has done some extensive research and spent a ton of money to find out what works and what doesn't.
If I had red diamond diesel money, that's the route I would've gone.
Don't forget the flushing of all the lines and a new oil to air cooler.
The stock one won't flush worth a damm. Back when I lost mine in
2015 I went with one from Ford. It comes with a new oil to air and
filled with fluid. All you need to do is the flush of the lines and the cooler
in the radiator along with topping off the fluids.
Also I saved a lot of $ by having Ed at FICM repair get it for me.
The shipping was quick and the job went well and no issues after.
But if your going to put more power to it your may be better off
building one or getting one that can deal with it better.

I was in the same position when my stock one crapped out. (Lost direct clutch, no reverse or overdrive) stock was cool, but I wanted to make sure I didn't have to do it again for a long time so I had one beefy one built. Again I say, Red Diamond Diesel is the way to go if you need something that will stand the test of time. His super stock trans is still worlds better than stock.
I would of not broken mine if Ford had done a better job welding the
sun gears to the clutch baskets. Spin welding may be fast but with a
diesel truck they are a point that can break and leave you stranded late
at night in below 28º weather for a few hours. Not knowing if the trans
could be saved or not I did not want to sit and idle grinding up good parts.
Oh well there is a reason I keep a heavy coat in the truck in the winter.
Yahiko, thanks for your suggestion. I was told by Ford that it was smart to replace the trans cooler but I wondered if this was just a gimmick to get me to buy more parts. After your recommendation I guess it is a smart thing to do instead of just trying to flush it. Now I have to decide whether to go back stock or Mishimoto. Thoughts on that anyone?

Stick with the stock trans cooler, the Mishimoto one is just an expensive copy.

I did the BD Diesel ones they're bigger and very well built. My truck really likes them, even stock it spools better.

IIRC the transmission package from Ford comes with the cooler, convertor, and a 3 yr unlimited mileage warranty. AND the dealership will replace it under warranty at no charge UNLESS it was improperly installed, even if they DIDN"T install it. In fact, Ford PREFERS it be dealership reinstalled and the warranty is good at any Ford dealership in the country.

I can confirm the above. They had to replace mine twice after they installed it and didn't ask me any questions or take a dime from me.
You don't want anything that was caught in the cooler when the transmission went out to flow back into the new transmission that would be an expensive mistake.

My paperwork said 2 years.
They will want the old cooler back when you send the core in for the refund.
I also found out they want to pick it up at the same place that they dropped
it off at. But that may of just been the shipping Co I was dealing with.
