Do I need any special tools to get to the wheel bearings on a 2000 2wd. front wheel bearings are shot already! Might as well replace the brake pads at 42,000 miles since I'll have it apart.

No special tools needed. You need to torque the spindle nut down in 2 stages. First torgueing is at around 20 ft-lbs and the second torqueing is at 17 in-lbs. Notice ft-lbs and in-lbs.
You should get large C-clamps to replace the disc pads.
