30 Psi?!

That's what the label inside the door says. But man, they look flat, they feel soft, and they squeal at the slightest provocation. Does everyone with a similar rig keep their tires at this level?

Ya gotta remember, what the door says refers to the OEM tires...if your running anything other than OEM you will have to figure out your own "preferred" pressure...the spec on the tire sidewall itself is a MAXIMUM rating under load...you should never run that high for normal use as tire pressure increases as the tire heats up. Do a search of the forums, there are some threads on figuring out tire pressures...ie. chalk line, where the tire is heating up at (sidewall or center) etc.

30 Psi?!

The tire pressure decal on the fuel filler door on my 2003 XLT extended cab 4 X 4 say 35 lbs and that really seems about right. I think the tires are P265/70R (maybe 255). They were the rip off $400 option from the P235/70R tires.

Can anyone verify that the tire pressure amount on the door jam or owners manual etc. is for the stock tires only?

I presume that as long as I replace the tires with the same size the 35 lbs would still be right but if I downsize or upsize, the pressure number would change?

Would that mean more pressure for downsized tires and less pressure for upsized tires?

I've got an 86 f150 with 31x10.5 tires. I'm running 40psi around town for better gas milage. If I go up to the mountains-higher elevation- and drive on dirt roads, I back it down to 30psi.

Folks...any sticker attached to a vehicle by the manufacturer refers to what THEY put on the vehicle (OEM) when it rolled off the line...they are manufacturers recommended specifications. That being said, it is really a matter of personal preferance as to what exact pressure you want to run...gas mileage, comfort, etc are all factors, as well as over-all safety (this is probably the most important)...under-inflated, you loose steering response and control, over-inflated you run the risk of increased pressure-to-heat ratio and could result in catastrophic failure. I could go on and on, but I think you get my drift.

Harry, how are those 31/10.5's wearing at 40psi? Pretty evenly?

Do a search in this forum under "chalk test" and you'll find all the information you need in order to determine what psi to run.

Underinflation will also cause heat buildup and tire failure.
