Here`s my question ; without changing to HID or LED can you recommend a better than stock halogen bulb ? Truck is an 2013 FX4 . Here in the city lighting is okay but when i`m in the mountains i would like to see a little further and to the sides a little better.
I like Sylvania X-Tra Vision bulbs. Reasonable price, available in local stores, last several yrs (unlike SilverStars- avoid these!).
When I got my '13 I thought something was wrong with the headlights, i.e., I need better bulbs when in fact what needed to be done was to raise the beam up ever-so-slightly. The cutoff is set way too low from the factory. Ok for lighted city driving, pretty sucky for coutrified driving. I pulled up to 30 ft from a wall, on level ground, and adjusted them both up 1/4". Then a couple of days later another 1/4" at 30 ft. Then another. Until I was satisfied with it. You'll know when you've gone too far- oncoming nighttime traffic will flash their high-beams at you.
I've tried brighter halogens in the past from Sylvania and others, however they all seemed to burn out significantly faster than OEM. This is with taking care not to touch the bulbs and get oils from your hands on them. The filament burns brighter so this is expected, but a pain.
If you go that route, may be worth while keeping an extra set in the truck.
I think i`ll give the ZXE s a try . Had the Silvers in my Escape for 2 years before i sold it and no issues . But with the truck i`ll be towing my trailer so i think brighter may be better. I don`t know if adjusting them would cause a problem when towing if the weight of the trailer could change the aim ? Thanks again for all the advice.
