aftermarket injector identification?
And a mismatched set at that. Looks like 2 OEM originals, and 2 different re-mans/replacements.
I say rip em all out, dump the split shots, and get a set of real injectors. You'll never get much performance out of those. There just isn't much reserve capacity left in the stock injectors, beyond what the factory tuning already uses. They are only 120cc.

Stock E99 injectors are AB code, and are 120cc split shots.
L99-'03 are AD code 140cc split shots.
So, the previous owner was likely correct about them being 140cc, but that is not a performance injector. Its just a stock L99-'03, and its still a split shot.
You want single shots. They start at 160cc, for new Alliant AC codes, found in certain International T444e engines. The next step up is an aftermarket Stage 1 or Stage 2. Do yourself a favor and skip the Stage 1. You might as well get larger then stock nozzles in the beginning, rather then figuring out later that should have bought them initially. Ask me how I know. Bigger injectors on stock nozzles lead to high pressure oil issues, etc... I would consider 180/80 or 180/100 as a good solid entry level performance injector. With the right tuning, those injectors should make 400hp
The truck MAY be smoking because it has the "wrong" injectors in it, at least for the programming in your e99 PCM. Or there may be something else wrong.
The 38R has lately fallen out of favor, for supposedly not being so great at spooling quickly on the bottom end.
There is no such thing as a "lift pump" on a 7.3L There is just a single electric fuel pump, that supplies the injectors fuel at about 50-60psi. The stock pump is more then adequate until you start approaching 500hp.
Common Rail diesels have a separate lift pump that then supplies fuel to a high pressure fuel pump, which ramps up fuel pressure to 30,000psi +
I highly doubt that anybody put a "cam" in it. Unless they were merely replacing a failed/worn stock one with another oem replacement. There are very few performance cams available for the 7.3L. They are STUPID expensive, and will do you no good without many supporting mods, such as substantially larger injectors, bigger turbo ( bigger then a 38R), and certainly custom tuning. There is almost no way someone who spent the cash on a 7.3L performance cam would have cheaped out, or been foolish enough to install mismatched AD split shots, and no tuning.
I hate to burst your bubble, but you either got intentionally hosed by a scammer/liar OR you bought a Frankenstein botch job of a truck from a moron who had no clue what they were doing, and may have done far more harm then good. I would have someone who is knowledgeable with 7.3's go over that truck carefully and figure exactly what is going on, before making any more mods. You may find you need to do some repair and/or correct the previous owners' screw ups before you ramp things up.
There appear to be some inconsistencies with the modifications or history of the truck. If I were you, I would go over EVERYTHING to make sure it is right and what it should be.
As for the injectors, they look like stock AD and not performance injectors. This is not to say that they are not "aftermarket", but definitely not a step up. Of course, they may be AD's with modified nozzles, but that is uncommon.
I disagree with Carguy3 about the entry level injector being 180/80 or 180/100. I lean more toward the 160/80 range, but that is just me and my decision based on my experiences and learning.
If you are looking to swap out the turbo, check out the new KC38R, it is said to be a beast of a turbo.
As to the lift pump, I know 7.3s don't have them factory, but my truck has an AirDog FP-100 @10 PSI supplying the Bosch factory pump (with 3 micron Donaldson fuel filter and a Baldwin water separator)
As to the cam, I have no way to prove or find out if there is indeed an aftermarket cam in it, that is what I was told by the previous owner, however my Idle sounds different than my roommates E99 7.3 when standing at the back of the truck. I can post a video to Youtube and post a link here once I have my truck all back together. The truck also has an 01 PCM in it (PMT2). I also have a SCTX4 with two custom tunes but the only info I have on them is one says “street” and one says “race”.
A little back story on the truck, it was a shop truck from a diesel performance shop in Houston, TX. That shop is no longer in business and the person I bought the truck from doesn't have contact info from anyone at that shop. Sadly this makes things rather difficult for me to learn what all is in the truck. That is one of the main reasons I became a member here is to learn from you guys and soon figure out exactly what I'm working with
Everyone’s replies have been helpful and greatly appreciated.Sous, after reading your reply I looked up the KC38R and that looks like the turbo that’s in my truck! I thought it was the GTP38R but wasn’t sure. Il post a pic of my turbo shortly but it looks just like the pics of the KC38R!! Turbo identification was going to be the next thread of mine but looks like that will be answered here!
