The outside door handle will not open the door, it open just fine from the inside. I have been just leaving the vent window unlatched and reaching in when getting in. Door lock actuators have been removed for years because they were seized and I was being cheap.
I pulled the panel off and tried to lube everything up and see if anything was disconnected or looked like a problem, but nothing jumps out at me. What should I be looking for?
It sounds to me like the exterior door handle is broken inside. You probably just need a new handle assembly, or maybe just a spring inside the button. Take the handle off and look inside the button. You can probably get the parts you need from a junkyard or an internet site.
Interesting, didn't think the handle had much to break inside it. I think I remember seeing a bolt or two inside the door to remove the handle, Ill try and pop it apart tonight and see what I can find
Took off the handle last night and it looks just fine. Button pushes the plunger, plunger plunges the lever and the lever levers the rod.
So I'm thinking it must be the latch that's broken. I tried pulling up on the rod while the handle was off to see if it wasn't getting pulled enough by the handle and it still didn't allow the door to open. Is there a trick to getting the latch out? Probably use an impact driver on the 3 phillips screws? They seem pretty tight.
Are you sure the lock is unlocking properly? AFAIK, the "lock" really just disengages the outside handle rod from the latch. Maybe that's where the problem lies.
