I am new to trying to be a driveway mechanic and I love to learn. I can your basic stuff like pads and such. I can replace stuff without problems but having trouble finding what issues are. The other day my brake light came on. And I noticed brake fluid everywhere under the truck. See attached. Is it possible for that bolt to be leaking and can I just replace it or should I replace the entire caliper?
I'd say it's not likely for the bolt to be leaking brake fluid. It looks like the leak is
coming from higher up above the caliper but I can't tell from the zoomed in
picture. Try zooming out a bit and give us a better over-all picture.
What normally fails on the brakes (besides the brake pads that are a maintenance
item) is the rubber hose that connects the brake caliper to the hard brake
line mounted on the frame. It needs to be flexible since the axle is moving up
and down a lot.
Still, like I said, some more pictures would be great.
That's a caliper slide pin (you can tell by the dust boot) and not a pressure containing bolt. Leak is from somewhere around the caliper, just not that piece.
