My truck was originally a manual swapped to auto and some P.O. Jerry rigged one in with the auto. I have swapped to a manual twice over. Once with the gasser and once with the diesel. No issues without it.
My best guess, and only a guess, would be because of the degree of difficulty to "rock" the truck back and forth when attempting to get in-stuck in a manual verses an auto. The torque load applied with an auto must be much greater than that of the manual.
Which set up are we talking about, the divorced T case? afaik the brace only came on the very last ones, the early production 1977 but should have been on them all. Without it, the T case flops around like shakey pudding under accel/decel loads.
My 75 (C6/203) had the brace when I bought it. When I changed the 203 to a 205 I had to cut it and weld a sleeve over it to lengthen it so it would bolt up. My 73 never had the brace and having it on the 75 seemed like a good idea to me. I don't recall if the 73 shook more without the brace but it was on the 75 so it went back on with the switch.
