I have a 1996 F350 crewcab dually. Two wheel drive. 7.3 PSD with 5 speed manual trans. 152,000miles. The truck has sat for about five years. Reason being my father went out one afternoon to drive it and it wouldn't start. His financial situation and health prevented him from doing anything to the truck so it just sat.
Last week he calls me and says come get it the truck fix it and it's yours, don't want to see it sit anymore.
So I pull the truck home. I put two brand new 850 CCA batteries in it. It cranks but will not start.
No wait to start light
No tach movement
No smoke from exhaust
No oil pressure gauge movement while cranking
No blown fusses under hood or in cab
Swapped around relays and fusses ( yes for the same amps )
Replaced CPS with grey one from AutoZone.
Fuel in bowl
HPOP resevor was empty. Filled it. Twice now it's staying full
Injector relay gets pretty warm
IDM on driver side inner fender gets pretty warm almost Hot to the touch.
Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated. Funds are a bit tight right now and don't have the money to start throwing parts at it hoping.
How did you check the fuses, visual or a test light? Pay special attention to #22 and # 8 in the under hood fuse panel, as they power the PCM. Remove the IDM from the drivers side fender and give it a good shake while listening closely for water sloshing inside. I suspect the IDM is bad, as it shouldn't get that warm. Do you know anyone that has a truck with the 7.3 in it that you could try your IDM in it to see if it will start? If the other truck will start, that will tell you your IDM is good.
IDM will not affect the tach. Oil pressure "gauge" on dash is not tied to any electronics. But don't look at any of that until you get that WTS on. You still have a main PCM power issue. Try disconnecting the fuel filter heater; a few people have had a no-WTS / no-PCM issue caused by the heater shorting, even though for whatever reason, the #22 fuse does not blow.
Ok guys. Think I found it. I took the IDM out and it is over half full of water. Opened it up there is a few places on the board that the runners (copper strips that run to the components ) or whatever they are called are burned in to.
Thanks for all the help guys. Hopefully it didn't get the PCM too.
Good news !!!
i think anyway.
Removed the IDM. It was literally over half full of water. Turned on the ignition. WAIT TO START light comes on !!!
Hopefully that means that the PCM is still good.
Gonna have hard enough time getting the IDM much less a PCM too.
Again. Thanks for all the help !! You guys are the best.
IDM is MUCH easier to source, since any IDM from a '94.5 to a 2003 will work. What's your general location? Maybe someone here who's nearby you has a spare IDM you can at least try out.
