Hello everyone I am looking for some transmission help with a swap that I would like to make happen. I have an 86 f150 4x4 powered by a 300 (DSII converted) backed by a NP 435. what I would like to do is re-power my truck with a perkins 4.125 I4 Diesel from an 82 ford ranger. The problem is the perkins was not offered with 4x4 capabilities and was only mated to a 4spd mazda trans with and integral bell housing. From what I can find is that the perkins bellhousing is sae #2. So my question is Does anyone know of any ford 5spd manual trans that will make for an easier swap? I have been looking and looking but can not find anyone who has done anything with one of these engines.
There is a reason no one has done anything with the 4.135. It was a Perkins design but never built by them it was only ever built by Mazda. And with all of 60 Hp and 90 Ftlbs of torque they were barely adequate in the Ranger let alone trying to power a 4x4 F150. Hope you are not planning on going much faster than 30 MPH with it.
The 300 I6 in your truck now by comparison has about 120HP and 233 Ftlbs of torque.
I am well aware of the history and power outputs of both engines. I do not wish to be schooled on them. Looking to see if there is anyone that may have some tips/ pointers to help me find a transmission that will bolt up with out too much hassle. My 300 is tired and has no oil pressure (it is not running as it should) and I do not know how many miles are on it as the odometer only goes to 10's of thousands. That said I wish to do this swap and do not want/need people talking down on it or talking me out of it. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
