Long time member on FTE, but new to the 6.0L and diesels.
Shopping today for motor oil at my local Sam's Club and came across 2 brands. Both are 15W-40 diesel motor oils. One is Shell Rotella 6/1 gal. case for $72.66 ($12.11/gal). The other is Chevron Delo 2/2.5 gal. case for $54.66 ($10.93/gal). Is there a difference between the 2 brands? Both are API CJ-4. I hear Rotella being used often, but wondered about the Delo. Why or why not?

Then you should know oil war is second only to truck brand war,so why did you bring it up?.
IMO,those are both fine choices. Some prefer 5w-40 in colder parts of the world but 15w-40 sound's good for Ca.
I wasn't sure if the 6.0's had any issues with one brand vs another. I know from the V10 Triton engines, it must use Motorcraft or Autolite spark plugs or problems arise. From what I've read so far, you should always use the Motorcraft oil filters in this diesel motor. I bought this truck used and no instruction manual came with it so I am doing the research to learn as much as I can about it.

The delo is ck-4 according to the the box. Also make sure you have the short motorcraft cap to go with the motorcraft filter. You can't use the motorcraft filter with the tall aftermarket cap.
Took me a whopping five seconds google search for images. Are you saying you don't know which cap is on your truck?
I'm saying the cap is one of the few things that doesn't have a Ford part # on it,there's room for confusion. I expect the average owner wouldn't know which they had if asked tall or short. If those 2 are the only sizes that have been made, that pic make's it easier.

You're right. The Delo is CK-4, but applicable for use in CJ-4 applications.
I did a quick research on CK-4 on API website and this is the latest and greatest. I will be getting this one.
In case anyone is interested, Costco has a sale going on $9 off 3/1 gal case for $27.99 until 9/24/17. That comes out at $9.33/gal. Not bad.
I ran Delo for years in my 7.3 about 400k miles and about 180k on my 6.0. I did however switch both to Rotella T-6 5w-40 synthetic. Either way you will be fine.

It is a pain they don't stamp it, good point. What floors me is when I see Ford dealers pushing the aftermarket filters, or at least making them an option for the customer.
I am guessing what happens is J6P comes in for a service job, has an aftermarket filter and does not want to pay an extra $20 plus for the right cap so the dealer offers them a cheaper alternative to keep them happy.
I hate to think how many OEM caps have been tossed in the garbage at the quick lube express.
Rats! I just got a reply from Chevron and they said that the new Delo 400 SDE CK-4/SN does not meet Ford's specifications WSS-M2C171-F1 for diesel oil. So far only their CJ-4 is approved.

Could of save the time we already knew that. And Costco does not have
it in 5W-40 anyway. So it a bust if your wanting to run the 5W-40.
I happened to be at the local big brand parts store and found that they
still had CJ-4 on the shelf in the Delo. Guess I should pick up some more.
