Differential Carrier

I have a 85 F350 we are changing gear ratio in. We are also switching it over to Posi so we have to change the differential carrier. It has a Dana 70U. My question is will a carrier for a Dana 70HD fit a Dana 70U. Thanks in advance!

Short answer is yes. The difference in the D70HD and D70U is overall height of the carrier. You will need to use an additional 0.125" of carrier shims to get your backlash correct.

What gear ratio and type of posi are you planning on getting?

Photo

I was reading an article last night, but it said Dana 70U and Dana 70 share a carrier, and Dana 70HD and Dana 80 share one. Not sure if it will work or not. It is a USA Standard Gear. I will post a photo if I can

You might be better off going with a normal D70 P/L case since it will fit your D70U housing properly. These D70s are a rather tricky differential. If you like, I can put you in touch with one of my sales reps who can help you out with this.

It's just a little tricky to explain everything over a forum.

Yep

That would be great. I just Don't want to buy the wrong carrier then have trouble taking it back. I am supposed to go look at a 67 F350 Dually and a 75 F350 Dually in a junk yard later, but I Don't know if they would work either. Thanks again
