My 6.9 won't start easily anymore. My friend was using the truck and left the key on all night. Had to replace batteries, they were weak anyway. Now the engine is very hard to start and eventually starts and runs ok if I hold it at half throttle long enough to warm up.
Could he have smoked the glow plugs?
It used to start in seconds.
Where is the best place to purchase them? Online or at Napa?
Is it a hard job to replace them?
I got the glow plugs from Napa and installed them. Nothing changed. What is next?
take them back to napa and get motorcraft ZD-1's. the glow plugs napa sells are garbage and usually burn out within one or two starts.
if that ebay guy does not still have them, rockauto sells the ZD-1's for under 10 each also.
my bet is the glow plug controller is bad. with key in run on cold engine, use a test light and see if any power comes out of the controller to the glow plugs.
There are 2 there. ZD11 and ZD1A Which one?

Sorry to keep on this but I cannot find ZD-1. All that comes up is the ZD-1A which has a spade plug on top and mine is round.

If you have the round end, then you have the ZD-9 plugs.
Those are used from 87 - 94 engines.
83 - 86 use the ZD-1 plugs. Not sure what the 1A is on the one`s I posted are or even make a difference.

1987 F350 2WD 6.9 No mods.
I found the Motocraft glow plugs and installed them along with a new controller.
Starts good now but dies after about a minute. Once it is running it runs good but after sitting for an hour hard starting. I think there is an air leak somewhere.
Real strange when it was running and starting great before my friend left the key on overnight. Can't figure out how this could be related. I changed the fuel filter along the way. Could it be a bad fuel filter?
