We have a 1997 F150 4.6L 2WD with a manual trans. We have to replace the engine. Do we pull the engine and trans together as a unit or separate the engine from the bellhousing to pull the engine? Should we remove the motor mount bolt at the block?
First you will want to pull off the transmission and transfer case if equipped.
There is barely enough room to get the engine out without the transmission.
You could cut off the top bar of the radiator support if you are set on leaving them together, even then something is going to have to tilt to fit the engine + transmission in there.
And yes, unbolt the motor mount from the block. If you try to pull the one bolt and leave the mount on the block and the bracket in the frame, it will need more height to clear for removal.
Leave the power steering and AC compressor in the truck. If you are really careful you can do it without opening the AC. If you are not careful you might bash the AC condensor and vent it anyway. It will be easier to pull the condensor along with the radiator and get it out of the way.
If you cut the top bar as shown and remove the radiator and AC condensor, the engine can come out with the transmission still on it. This is a 2003 F150 2 wheel drive. If you decide to cut your truck, be careful, there is a wiring harness on this upper bar.
