Sometimes I can be a lazy turd. Today may be one of those days!
I picked up the 302 as recommended in the poll I had out there (see it here) and started the process. I recently found a machine shop who can do that portion of the rebuild and am waiting on payday for that to happen. Budget builds...I tell ya!
Anyways, for those who may want, you can follow the build here.
Cool! Hey, if that yard has good prices, go back and get you some heads from a 5.0 Explorer or Mountaineer. They really wake up a 302! It took me two days to get them off of the donor, and three days to get them on my car, but they made a nice difference.

I'll assume you didn't follow the second link...no worries. So I set out to locate a good, solid engine with potential. I wanted to stick with a 302 so all my accessories would still fit and there would be no surprises. Since my current engine is a later model (mid 70s) it is also a lower compression engine and that meant finding one out of a 1969 to 1971 Ford. While that was a lot of cars and trucks, in my tiny little pace in the world, that becomes the needle and haystack scenario! But...God loves me! I found one in Clermont, GA just 20 some miles from me. The engine came out of a 1969 Torino and that means it is a 9.5:1 compression engine! Perfect! It was only $300! Perfect! It was being sold by a hot rod shop and they already took a peek 'under the hood'! Perfect! We struck a deal and then some! While I didn't have the additional cash on me at the time, the seller also has a couple of pairs of Ford GT40 heads (best breathing 302 heads made by Ford) for $200. We struck a trade deal for those and an Edelbrock Performer intake. I hand them the Demon 650 cfm carb plus $150 and they hand me the heads and intake!
Oh yeah, with a good exhaust and the right cam, that will be a stout engine.
I think the 9.5:1 comes from the heads. If you get the 4 bar GT40Ps, they should keep your compression pretty high.
