Transmision X-member Compatibility

My transmission X-member is cracked between the two mounting holes so I should probably replace it sooner rather than later. I figure if I come across a clean, rust-free one in the junkyard I'll just grab that.

Are all the X-members the same, '87 - '96 regardless of transmission type?

I have never measured, but I would hazard a yes, with a caveat that it might be needed to move it for fitment and the tranny motor mounts are varying. If you have a welder, they all fit...

No, there are different cross members.

I found out the hard way that the 4 and 5spd manual cross members were different. Had to cut the transmission tunnel as well. I can't speak to automatics though. I don't believe in them.

I have a 88' f250 with a ZF-5 and just did the Dana 60 swap donor truck was 94' f350 460 with c6 not sure if the c6 was stock but the X-member was original and bolted right to trans. I used that X-member in my 460 ZF-5 truck. Lined right up with all bolt holes no problem.

So it's sounding like the donor would need to be a M5 or I'll likely have problems. Could it be any year, '87 - '96?

Why can't you just weld it, or have someone weld it.

It could be done, but I don't think it would last. A better alternative could be welding in an overlapping plate.

But the X-member has some rust, so I figured simply replacing it might be best.
