Hey guys new to The Forum and this is my first post besides my intro. I have a 87 Ford F-150 with 302 V8 it is four-wheel drive. The problem I'm having is about a month ago I changed out the cigarette lighter for the power outlet now I'm not sure if it's is what caused the problem or not as I've had it taken it everything is hooked up correctly I mean it's not too hard LOL but roughly about two weeks ago my truck started not starting after driving it for just a few minutes but after I would set for a second it would start right up until the other morning when I went out and tried to start it but the battery was completely dead. I then jumped the truck off and it started right up and I left it running for about 15 to 20 minutes before I cut it off when I shut it off it would not start back up like battery was completely dead so I went and purchased a new battery but just to be safe had the alternator checked and it's burnt up and come to find out it's a second gen alternator which I've been hearing nightmares about so my question is what is my best option for the new alternator should I buy a 3rd generation what amperage would be the best I do have LED lights for the tail lights and plan on installing either LED headlights or HID headlights I also have a newer aftermarket stereo with amp and speakers. I'm just wanting to make sure that I get an alternator with another amperage and one that's not going to burn up on me the second gens do. Can someone please help, any suggestions would be helpful as to my best option for my alternator upgrade/replacement. Thanks guys I will await reply.

One of the mods will be along to move your post to the proper forum. I'm not usually the type to criticize someone's post, put, there are times. This is one of them.
Hijacking someone else's post, that is, using someone else to post divert the conversation to your issue, is never acceptable. On any forum. Please refer to the Older, Classic and Antique forums, for your questions regarding your truck. They can be found by clicking on the FORUM button, at the top left corner of your page. Scroll down to the Older, classic and antique section, then click on it. You will be shown sever choices of year groups. One of them is, "1987 - 1996". Your question will be moved to that section. You should go there to continue any further discussions about your truck.
Please don't be offended. That is not my intent. We were all new, to this, at one time and we all have to learn.
First of all I'd like to apologize to 180buckshot. It was never my intention to quote hijack your post as pbsdaddy has suggested. Pbsdaddy had you came to me about what I did or you thought I did without the accusation that I knew what I'd done and that it was intentional I wouldn't have took offense. The last part of your message was very helpful and I appreciate it very much. Apologies to everyone, I never meant to offend anyone I'm just knee to the whole forum thing and wasn't sure how to properly post in the forum so when I saw my previous post which was my intro post I but my question there. Again I apologize 180buckshot.

Don't worry about it. He hasn't been on the forum for 2-1/2 years.

Don't worry about that either. There's a little triangle thingy to the right next to the scales that he should have clicked on without comment & asked a mod to move.
Working from a phone is not the most conducive way to surf & post on this very large web site.
As for your problem, yes a 3G upgrade is probably what you need.
You can use the on site search function, but easiest is google "3G upgrade Ford Truck Enthusiasts"
If you need more, you can click on the gold "new thread" button & start your own thread here in forum #28, 86-95 F series.
