I was pulling a car trailer (no trailer brakes on it) with my 06 screw. I have a Reese towpower 74378 brake controller. The trailer lights would randomly stop working. I would push the manual slide **** on the brake controller and the brake lights would resume working, but would randomly stop again only to start working once again after pushing the ****. Later in the day I unhooked the trailer, and didn't use the truck to for a few hours. I then went and drove the truck around without the trailer and the truck brake lights would stop working, but (surprise) I would push the **** and they'd start working again. Within thirty minutes it happened again, but I pushed the **** and it started working. It's been a couple weeks now and I haven't had any problems, but I also haven't hooked a trailer up to it since then.
I'd really like to know what's going on because the next time I pull my trailer, I may not have a friend driving behind alerting me to the issue like this recent time. Anyone know what's up?
Since you know you have a problem with the truck brakes, I would start with that circuit and leave the trailer brake controller disconnected until I resolved it. I'm thinking you have a bad switch at the brake pedal and power backfeeding to that point from the brake controller is temporarily drying out moisture in the switch, but that is just a shot in the dark at this point.
I'm thinking it may be the brake switch. I've read that a bad brake switch can also cause issues with the cruise control. My cruise control randomly doesn't work, and has been like that for a few years. Hoping to kill two birds with one stone here.

YES, the cruiser control works THRU the truck brake light switch...
