I have a 2014 STX SC, 5.0, 3.55 rear, tow package. Don't have a brake controller yet, but will get the OEM unit an have the truck programmed accordingly.
The question. I need to tow a 24' X 8.5' enclosed trailer. The trailer weighs 3,000 lbs. and I will be towing it empty, one-way. Most driving will be up I-95 from GA to NC. I've read the manual and did some quick internet research. Granted, if the trailer was loaded it would be a different animal but empty everything I see says no problem. Is there something I'm not considering? I'll stop by the dealership tomorrow and talk with them about it but until then this is kind of bothering me. If I can't do it my daughter will be in a bind so to speak.
If it were me, I would get a cheap brake controller and harness and use that until you get the OEM one that you want.
I bet you can find a used one on Craigslist cheap as well.
We just had a wreck on my jobsite last week where a guy came in to the workzone too fast and drove through two open holes before he came to a stop. It was a dually hauling a small trailer. When the Hi-Po was doing their crash investigation the size of the trailer and need for brakes came up as a topic of discussion.
Pretty cheap insurance to get a cheap timing based controller and harness and just Velcro it to the dash for the trip.
You should have no problem towing that, my truck has the same exact drivetrain. I tow a race car hauler with no sweat, it does downshift some on the hills but no problems at all. I'm using an aftermarket brake controller that se me back about 90 bucks..
If an enclosed trailer that size only weighs 3,000 lbs, it must be a cheap low quality trailer. My 7x16 weighs 2,500. A 24' should go much more than that.
The truck is going to struggle due to the amount of wind enclosed trailers catch. So you'll want tow/haul mode on and prepare to see really low MPG numbers. Even my little 7x16 works the truck hard. It's very different from towing a flatbed car hauler.
