Brake controller
Hi all, I am looking to add a trailer brake controller to my 1997 Mountaineer. I am looking to tow a ~3500 to 4000 lb trailer and it involves some serious hills so I am not willing to try this without trailer brakes. Anyone done this before? How easy is it to add to the truck (I am surprised that it was only set up with a 4 pin harness and no controller yet the vehicle is rated to tow 6600lbs!).
Any advice on what brands to get?
I figured I would start with this forum to see if there are any Explorer specific tips. If I don't get much I'll repost it to the trailer/towing section.

I wired my '99 XLT completely from etrailer.com...
The controler I use...
Tekonsha #9030 Voyager Brake Activator - Proportional
Once you select the controller on the site, depending on which connector your trailer uses, at the bottom of the page they have "kits". I installed the 6 round for my trailer. I did all of the instalation myself, but still went to a trailer dealer and had them check the system over for $20. They fine tuned my level on the controler, but everything else checked out ok. I used it for 3 years on there and worked like a charm.
I have since taken it out of the Explorer and wires it into my 250 since I haul with it. Works just as good in there, but I have to change the trailer over to a 7 round system since that is what the 250 is set up for.
