driveshaft trouble

I was wondering if anyone knew how to tighten up a driveshaft on a 93 F-150 4x4. It takes it about a second to engage and it gets annoying if I'm in a hurry. 'Preciate the help.

Front or rear driveshaft. If it's an automatic truck then I would say that's about normal. I have an automatic in a 65 F-100 and it takes aboutthat long to engage when going into any gear.

The only way you'll get instant in gear action would be with a standard. But then you have to fight the clutch.

1988 F-150, SWB, 5.0 EFI (formerly 4.9 EFI), M5OD 5 speed, 3.08 gears, Summit shorty truck headers, Custom built Flowmaster exhaust system. Force 4 LP6000 lightbar, Federal signal PA-300 100 watt siren, Icom IC-V100 50 watt mobile radio.
=======================================
1965 F-100 (just purchased 1/18/01), SWB, 390, C-6 auto. Dual exhaust, Not much else to do to it.

Can see both below.

Fishmann, Is there a clunk when you put it in gear? It sounds like the splines on the tranny output shaft or yoke could be worn. Does it do it in 4x4? Maybe worn u-joints but you would hear them and your days would be numbered. Also, check trans mount. When you say "enguage", are you maybe talking about the trans after you shift into gear? Does it happen in forward and reverse? How about transfer case enguagement into 4x4? Sorry about all of the questions. Post back. Maybe we can figure it out.

It sounds like you're talking about the time it takes to engage from the time you move the shifter if that is what you're asking about it is about normal for an automatic transmission of any type. there is no adjustment on a drive shaft it is simply that a shaft that ties the transmission to the rear end .

If it's making a clunking noise, I'd check the pinion gear on the rear end...my 88 F150 had that problem...droppped the driveshaft, put some loctite on the pinion shaft and torqued the nut back down to specs....never heard another noise back there again....

Sounds typical of the u-joints once they're worn. I'm sure you're experiencing much better reaction, now.

Good to hear that you got it squared away. U-joints can be a pain and even a bigger problem when they let go. Good to see it nipped in the bud before it let you down. Jake.
