You might get more response from it.
I know the fuel tanks in a Fox body mustang are odd shaped but might still fit between the rails? Getting fuel filler to it might be interesting.
What is wrong with the 9" that is in the truck?
agreed on the tank, that section where the pump goes is 10" tall. as far as the rear end goes, I'm not well versed on them, i assumed since the 6banger in it only runs 55mph, i figured i needed a rear end swap.
thanks again for your help.
Likely the gearing is steep in the original 9". Much easier to just buy a different center section and change the gearing. If the truck has 4.11, you could easily find something in the 3.00-3.50 ratio and slip it in. No need to change the whole housing. Typically most any V8 vehicle came with 3.00-3.50 ratio. Only the lower powered 6 cylinder vehicles came with deeper gears to help them move the weight. I'm talking a $50 swap over.
I had an '88 Mustang 5.0 in my '81 SWB F150 back in the early 90's (we swapped it back to carb), fun truck to drive, but around town, it wasn't very happy with the trucks stock 2.75 rear gears. I changed out the carrier for one with 3.25's, and it made a ton of difference around town, and was still a long ways from screaming on the highway.....
I don't know how a Fridge compares weightwise to a Bull Nose, and this will to some degree affect it's ability to pull, but 3.25 is a pretty good compromise between stoplight get up & go vs highway cruising speed. and my truck was a C6 auto trans (1:1 in drive), so if you are running an OD trans, you could go a little stiffer on the gear, perhaps 3:55, 3.73.
As far as the mustang 8.8 goes, even if it was the PERFECT width, if you look @ the axle tube size vs the explorer or F series 8.8 diffs, you will be amazed at how much more robust they are compared to the mustang, and then there's the mustangs tiny brakes & the 4 bolt axle flanges.....the nine inch is great, because you can swap out the gears by changing out the carrier, even a novice should be able to do it in an hour
