Reverse Fail
I have noticed lately that I have needed to added trans fluid, sometimes a quart every 2-3 weeks.
I do not see it on the ground.
Of course, quite impossible to check while moving.
I do not see leaks anywhere either.
Where is it going??
More concerning though, is maybe once every 20-30 times, reverse will not kick in. I will have to put it in drive, then back to reverse.
The shift column play is sloppy, I do know where to tighten it behind the dash and will do today.
No issues with any other gears.
Currently about 245,000 miles on it.
Think just slop in column or another issue starting?
No idiot lights illuminated.
I have not run the codes, it's a $250 charge to get that done, only the dealer has the code package around here.

Fix the loose screws under the dash, and odds are that will fix reverse.
As to the leak, there should be some fluid somewhere.
Front of the bell housing, tailshaft, pan, cooler lines and connections, and the cooler itself would be where I would look. And if your coolant overflow tank is overflowing, your radiator may be filling up with coolant (though I would expect coolant in the tranny and other problems in that case.

After inspecting:
Coolant tank is as it should be.
ATF on stick looks pure.
Zero leaks underneath trans, just a slight oil drip from front seal on engine.
Bracket behind panel is tight.
ATF level is right where it should be after a 250 mile trip.

It did forget what reverse is one time during the trip.
Coolant is pink, but I think I put pink in, I used the Caterpillar coolant (been awhile).
And it does smell like coolant, not ATF.

There is a fill plug on the side of the transfer case. Remove it. If more than a few drops of fluid drains out you've found where the fluid went.
