Recently my transmission started shifting hard between drive and reverse. Sometimes I will hit the gas and it will go slowly at first and then all of a sudden catches and will then drive like normal. I am not seeing any slipping between any other gears. I checked the fluid and it is a clear brown color and is at the proper level. The last time it was serviced was about 45,000 miles ago as per a marking written on the trans pan. What do you guys think? Is it overhaul time? Or do I just take it for maintenance?
Welcome to FTE!!!
first Check all the vacuum lines and the cable.
Then change the fluid and filter.
put in some transX or Lucus ATF.
It should not be brown and it should be changed ASAP.
ATF should be red.
Thanks Bill. The issues have been intermittent, but I am definitely going to get this done today. Bought everything last night including the 19qts(!) of ATF fluid.
While Im at it... do you know anything about coolant? I have a green coolant that I have been adding Napakool nitrites to and verifying it with the Napakool test strips. My dad is telling me that the coolant should be red as this engine requires a special coolant. Is what I am doing with the Napakool sufficient? Or should I have the special coolant?
I do not think that they started the red coolant tell 2001, but i may be wrong.
ask a dealer, or buy a Chilton book. that will tell you for sure. I know my 98 does not take the red stuff.
