Using e4od with carburetor

I've been trying to figure out how to make this work without an expensive controller. I found this on another site so I thought I would share.

  • Carb swap E4OD
I recently bought a hacked up full size bronco, 1992, 351w, E4OD that the PO ripped the FI off of and put a carb on it. Since there is a lot of bad info on the net about "you can't do this", "won't work", have to have a stand alone controller ect I figured I'd throw it up here how I got it to work as it should.

Since the under hood harnesshad been destroyed I picked up another under hood harness for pennies and also grabbed the MAP sensor and distributor.

replaced harness so it was back to factory, replaced distributor with factory dizzy (it has PIP sensor aka cam position sensor), installed the MAP sensor.

At this point the computer, as far as the trans is concerned, thinks the FI is there.

Next buy the TPS from usshift for a street demon (or what ever carb you have) since it comes with wiring to match the TPS. Mount it, splice the TPS into the factory harness. Buying the TPS from other vendors doesn't usually include the harness.

    88-91
signal return black/ white to black (on tps wiring)
vref orange/ white to orange +5v
throttle position signal dark green/light green to green

    92-96
signal return gray/red to black (on tps wiring)
    vref brown/white to orange +5v
throttle position signal gray/white to green

the factory computer needs the tach and pip signals from the dizzy, coolant temp (sending unit for the year you have), the MAP and TPS from the engine to properly shift. I've seen people complain about the factory dizzy and not being able to control timing. I like it personally, if the knock sensor is working it will compensate for crap fuel, light or heavy loads ect much better than a standard dizzy.

Use AF gauge to tune you carb, I use a street demon and the only diff I can tell other then FI is I have to tap the gas about 1/4 pedal if it's cold out to let the choke engage. If it's warm out it cold starts as good as FI. Actually I think the street demonruns a little better than the FI with its small primaries I feel like I have better throttle control than with the big FI butterflies plus it's kinda cool to to hear the back barrel open, yeah it's a 3 barrel carb. I've only been able to test it going up a 35-40 degree slope but it never missed a beat, idled perfectly. Haven't had any major side to side action with it yet.

Less than $200 for the parts to make your carb conversion work on your gas burner Ford truck/Bronco without spending $1000+ on a stand alone controller. Yes I know the quick 4 controller is less than a grand but by the time you add a TPS, wiring harness and shipping your right at a grand.

Great info there overall, it's not that hard or expensive to make it work with the factory PCM. I can understand doing a carb swap on a motor that has pretty extensive upgrades that won't run well with the stock EFI system but with a stock motor nothing is being improved so I'm not sure what makes people hack up a system that just needs a little troubleshooting.

A little off topic, but what's with all the Ebay links in your post, because they're not in the original thread at Pirate4x4?

Nice find. It looks like whoever wrote that was doing some extreme hill climbs. I'd think EFI would be better for that though.

Think that's something with the site and ebay crawling for keywords to link to.

When he searched google for threads, the original pirate4x4 thread hyperlinked some of his keywords to potential products.
