I'm enjoying my new truck and been driving about 500 miles so far. Gas mileage is around 16 MPG (6.7L). (I think my 2012 was about ~18. Hope the new one is getting there sooner rather later).
Last week when parking my 2000 flat bed truck with some unlocked tools (worth ~$600) in the back at local Home Depot, some unknown-long-lost-friends came by and took them all. Haha.
So I'm determined to get an aluminum retractable for my truck, for 3 main reasons:
- better gas mileage
- look
- bed storage security.
I'm pretty set on RetractPro MX for the following main points. Please chime in if you think otherwise (please advice on alternative brand/model):
- Lifetime warranty
- any position stop
- handle vs rope
Really like mine! Got mine from TonneauCoversWorld for $1752 with free shipping. Unfortunately the first one I received was for an 09 Dodge short bed, not a 17 Ford Long bed.
I had one for 12 years on my Chevy before selling the truck for the Ford I am suppose to get this week. This time I went with Truck Cover USA....Their factory is here in San Diego and I got a tour...These covers are built!!!!!
They also come with 2 different tool boxes you can add.

I also got the Truck Covers USA roll cover and am happy with it.

Hi Tony - so you had the RetraxPro the past 12 yrs? I didn't know they started back that long. How would you compare the 2?
Better than Retrax Pro (but it's the SD fan favorite) is the Roll-N-Lock A-Series. Compare them and you'll see for yourself. Less $$$ too.
I briefly looked at the Roll-N-Lock. They all look very similar actually. The major differences I can see are:
- stop locations: American USA's is every 12", Roll-N-Lock is 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 - so only 3 locations. RetraxPro is any position.
- warranty: 2/3 yrs Vs lifetime for RetraxPro
I never actually use or even see/touch one so I'm not so sure about built quality. Roll-N-Lock says theirs has the smallest coil-up which I like a lot for available storage volume. I'll check to see how much is the difference.
It was the original Retrax not the pro. Mine was a polycarbonate rolling cover. It worked great, but near year 10 the cover started to crack right near the canister. The crack continued to grow.
A few things I did not like about the old cover. The lock was just a friction lock which used the rail along the bed of the truck. The plastic cover came off of the key hole leaving it exposed to the harsh San Diego weather : )
The canister on the retrax is much bigger than the Truck Cover USA canister and the space under the canister was pretty much useless unless the item was very short.
It did really good on keeping water out after I put a tailgate seal on. After about 5 years the water started leaking in the sides of the cover where the seals were getting old.
I found the old receipt and I paid $900.00 shipped to the house and I put it on.
The Truck Cover USA is more expensive especially since I am going to get the American Work Cover Jr. The cheapest I have found in San Diego is $2500 out the door installed.

I got the regular Truck Covers USA roll cover but without one of the two tool box options, since it's not a work truck. That made it cheaper. Cost was a bit over $1500 shipped across the country after some phone negotiations, and my wife and I installed it in an afternoon. I like that I can open it without using the key but instead opening the tailgate and pulling the release handle. It's got a long strap made of seatbelt material to allow you to open and close it gently from the rear. This is my first tonneau cover so have nothing to compare it too. I do like that it doesn't flap around in the breeze like the fabric ones we pass on the highway.
I have the retrax pro and really like it. The friction lock is for partially open use. The locks go into detents when closed for a secure lock. It looks great and is probably the driest roll cover. I also like the latch to open better than the pull strap.
The downsides are the bigger canister, which isn't that strong against impacts.
My second choice was truck covers USA. I liked the smoother matte retrax pro look better, which was the deciding factor for me.
