How do you prefer to work under truck, as in what kind of barrier do you have between you and the floor? I used a creeper for a while, but I never could get used to it for some reason. It was mainly just uncomfortable. I've been using cardboard sheets for years now. They increase comfort, insulate against a cold floor, and I just toss them when they get used up. The downside is that don't work very well if I have to move very much. Then, tools disappear underneath the cardboard when I do move it.
I was curious what everyone else used. Modern creepers look more comfortable than the ones I had, but are pretty pricey.
I went to General Rubber and bought a mat that is made from the same material as a rubber band , its 1/4" thick and easier to lay on and can be cleaned,,could probably get something softer an thicker if needed just depends on what your personal taste is. Later I had a pit dug out when I had my shop built so I can drive over it and work standing up which was even better
When I put in the driveway, I asked for a smooth finish rather than broomed so I could roll around on a creeper.
What I actually use depends on the task. Lots of moving around, it's the creeper, messy things get cardboard and if it's cold, I wear a Levi denim jacket from the mid-eighty's.
I use a creeper. The extra ground clearance helps me to actually reach anything that I'm working on without having to spend the whole time doing crunches
I use a rubber entry mat that are in most business doorways. You can pick them up at the uniform places, they replace them when they get a tear. Rubber on bottom, Nice if you have to crawl under in bad conditions. Carpet on top. Take to car wash to clean. I learned of this when one of the firetrucks I took care of had a wreck in a snowstorm. Wrecker driver had to pull driveshaft and he brings out a floor mat and unrolled it and never had to lay in the snow! Light bulb went off. Now I take one when I trailer something somewhere. Works great.
Another cardboard fan here! Why do looky-loos, who come up to ask if we're working on a car/truck, always step on the cardboard?!
At the junkyard, I just pull a rear seat bottom out, and lay on that.
The PNPs in the SF Bay Area, at least the ones I go to, actually lay sections of carpet under the trucks! Beats having "3/4-by" aggregate under yer back!
I love the 40" x 72" moving blankets from Harbor Freight, always seem to be on sale for $4.99. They work great for anytime I have to get up under my truck, and at that price they are disposable when I get them too dirty.
