I've got a couple old carpet protector plastic chair mats from work. They're easy to move, easy to slide across, and easy to wipe up spills. If they get too greasy, I just pour some gasoline on them and clean the mess with an old broom. Then I rinse them off with the garden hose.
I have a mid rise lift so at least I can kneel under my vehicles when I work on them now. One day I will have a regular lift so I can stand up when I work on them. I got pneumonia one year helping a buddy change out an engine one Christmas eve from laying on the concrete floor. I now use a sheet of 1" Styrofoam insulation board if I have to lay on the ground anymore. It reflects your body heat and keeps you comfy and warm.
Just to share something funny with you, many years ago when I was a teenager, I was determined to change oil in my truck one day after we had some snow. I didn't have a garage to work out of back then, so I decided to change it in the driveway after a recent snowfall. The driveway was packed from vehicles driving over it and had become ice. Determined as I was, I threw down a piece of cardboard, laid down on it and I slid from one side of the truck clear out the other side. Needless to say I post phoned the oil change for another day. lol
Im blessed with having a nice size shop, but no lift, so its usually carpet that we have left over from the house.... Sometimes the creeper, but it can be more of a pita than anything....
