ENGINE SWAP
FIRST TIME ON THIS SITE:
Installing a early 302 into 56 ford pick up (312 had issues). Transmission is a 4 speed top loader from the 312.
I have front motor mounts (no problem here)--concern---- will the cross member that was the rear engine/trans mount for the 312 have to be removed? I have a mock up block with the bell housing and trans attached---waiting for truck to come back from painter---small fire ---blistered the firewall slightly.
Any help/advice
Thank You,
Respectfully red 56 ford pickup

4 speed top loader introduced in 1963, but it was never installed in trucks or Y blocks. 1963/64 4 speed top loader installed with Ford/Merc 352/390/406/427 engines.
There was also a Warner T-10 4 speed, also only installed in cars.
312 was never installed in trucks either. 312: 1956/57 Ford Passenger Cars/Thunderbirds; 1956/60 Mercury.
1956 F100 available w/optional 272 2V Y block with standard equipment 3 on the tree 3 speed manual. Warner T-98 4 speed and 3 speed Ford-O-Matic were optional.
btw: I see you live in CA: There's an all original red '56 F100 Custom Cab sitting in a driveway in Whittier. Has a 272, radio, heater, Ford-O-Matic.
Guy claims it belongs to his brother, it hasn't moved since at least 2001.

Bill thanks for the reply--my truck did have the 312 with the 4 speed top loader
it was a very clean installation (I understand the 272 mounts like a 312 (correct). The 312 would still be in the truck however fuel gravity feed into the pan. I think via the fuel pump---had a small explosion and fire.

DO NOT remove the rear motor mount crossmember. It also keeps the frame/cab mounts aligned. Many frames have suffered from the removal of the rear motor mount crossmember.
The problem with not removing the crossmember is clearance issues with the transmission pan on automatics. If you plan on running a stick no problem. Don't forget you'll need a rear trans mount since the Y Blocks Didn't use one.
If you truly have an old 312 it's worth quite a bit even if you just part it out. Should be able to easily get $1,000 for; short block, heads, & 4 barrel intake. Ram Horns, aluminum valve covers etc if you got em take the profit even higher.

BJ thanks for the information--I was not going to remove the cross member. It was the last thing on my mind. I was going to install my mock up engine/trans first and c how things fit-- also thanks for the tip on the 312. Noting is wrong with it, i think i will keep it. Thanks again RED truck.

What mounts are you looking at?

These should allow you to install a small block V8 into your frame.
