Trailer Towing Brake System Type

Searched this forum and at 58 pages couldn't find the exact answer I am looking for,

I have a boat trailer that has a compression type tongue (hydraulic), but requires that the plug be connected for reverse so that the brakes do not lock up. Is this considered to be electric over hydraulic or do I not need to bother setting up the trailer brake for my boat trailer as it will not do anything anyway?

I have a 2017 F250 SRW King Ranch 4x4 with trailer brake.

Thanks for any clarification.

Kevin

I believe that is called surge brakes... and the brakes are controlled by the "Surge" device.. not a truck brake controller...

I read this article on electric over hydraulic brakes too and it all makes better sense. Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes - Trailering - BoatUS Magazine

My question would be since I only have surge brakes on my trailer. Looking at the various settings under trailer options none of them apply so I do need the trailer brake controls from the truck changed at all for my boat trailer.

Highly doubtful.

What is the trailer wiring connection style and what wires are actually ran out of it. The brake power signal from the truck may not even make it to the trailer.

My gooseneck equipment trailer is the 7 blade rv style connection. It only has 6 wires. No reverse wire at all. I want to add reverse lights so I need a new plug and wiring to the junction box.

the surge does the braking.. no electronic controller needed.

just lights an a wire from your reverse lights.. to lock OUT the brakes while backing up.

personally I did NOT think the surge type was still being made.. I used them back in the early 70's.
Rental trailers.

Surge brakes require no controller. Yes, they are still available mainly on boat trailers. Something about water and electricity not mixing.

I used an equipment trailer years ago with surge brakes. When they worked they were nice. The trailer was built in 1993.

Electric over hydraulic use electricity from the power unit to power a pump that pushes brake fluid to the brakes. The action is faster than on a surge system.

Straight electrical is most common on trailers.

My question would be since I only have surge brakes on my trailer. Looking at the various settings under trailer options none of them apply so I do need the trailer brake controls from the truck changed at all for my boat trailer.
No.
