So... it is time for a tranny fluid change and filter.
Tranny replaced about 140k ago, but this time I decided to not be lazy and do it myself. It was rebuilt with Bully Dog HD internals... at least that's what the shop said.... I think.... it has been awhile.
Anyway...
I keep seeing the fluid to use is Merton V, then Dex/Merc, then Merc V Synth. Ok. WTH. Which one?
And does this tranny seriously take 18 quarts?
The fluid you want to use is Mercon V, not Dex/Merc. It takes a good amount of fluid to completely flush this trans. Mark Kovalski did a write up on the proper flush procedure in the tech folder.
Just did a complete flush over the weekend. And I used 20 quarts to do the complete flush. I used the Mobile One Multi-Vehicle full synthetic. Which is Mercon V approved.
OK so it holds 18 but typically use 20 for the flush n fill. Makes sense.
And definitely Mercron V.
This tranny has been on regular fluids for its life. Any reason to or not to switch to synthetic? Never had an issue with this trans and it still pulls as good d is it did when I got it rebuilt.
The only reason you wouldn't want to switch to synthetic is the cost. That is the only downside to synthetic. It outperforms conventional fluid in every way.
Looks like I am heading for the parts tore on the way home. Just another excuse to play in my shop.
I did see in the instructions that I can reuse the pan gasket but as I have found a slight leak from a couple of the pan bolts I am going to replace it anyway.
Thanks for the info guys!
