I just picked up a 96 f150 4.9 5 speed. I guess the head gasket went and then the guy just parked it. It's been sitting for almost a year so now the motor is stuck. I'm just looking for an engine to put in it to keep it cheap. What year range will have the same efi setup on it? Or at least let me bolt up my efi stuff?
'96 is something of a one-off, as it's the first and last year for OBD2 on the F150. The long-block is pretty much interchangeable with earlier years (back to '87) but you'll need to move a bunch of stuff over from your '96.
Are you sure the engine is done? It takes a lot to kill a 4.9.
I haven't really looked at it. It wouldn't crank so I put a ratchet on the balancer and it won't turn. Could just be rings rusted to the cylinders, don't know yet. It has 240k miles on it so if it's junk that's the way it goes I guess.
put some penetrating oil in the cylinders and let it sit. Then after a day or two try to turn it over.
Mixing 50/50 ATF and acetone makes a good penetrating oil, seems to get thru the rust better than pb blaster imho.
If the head gasket went, and there is any chance of repairing the engine, the head would have to come off anyway. I would remove the head and see what things look like. If it doesn't look too bad, you could take a block of wood and a sledge hammer and beat somewhat on top of the pistons to try and loosen the engine up.
^^^ All good advise. FWIW, when I got my replacement 4.9 engine for $75, it was in "as-is", unknown condition. It had as much oil in the sump as water (not coolant). I hand spun it around a few times, it started right up and has been running fine for thousands of miles.
