I have a 1996 Bronco with a knocking rod and am considering a 89 f-150 with 5.0 and bad torque convertor.
I could swap parts either way depending on whether they will fit or not.
Will the 89 5.0 drop right into my Bronco or were there differences? Hard to believe Ford didn't change anything over a decade. Maybe swap the PCM with it? Do I need to get his VIN code to determine the exact motor?
I'm not an experienced builder, I'm just trying to get by on a budget, but also leave room for later when the budget increases.
I'm also wondering whether I would be better fixing the f-150 as it seems to be an old man's toy- 87k on an 89 means it wasn't driven hard. It looks clean with nary a scratch and I think he just took it fishing once in a while.
The basic 5.0 motor never changed so it'll bolt right in there, but there are numerous differences with the EFI and emissions systems on these 2 trucks so I'd suggest you strip the motor bare and put the complete intake and all accessories from the '96 on the '89. You might also consider swapping the '96 valvetrain into the older motor too since it's got a pathetic flat tappet cam in it now, and besides being down on power from your '96 you will also need to put a ZDDP additive in with every oil change to keep the cam from self destructing.. because modern oils no longer have any zinc to lubricate flat tappet cams.
Thanks Conanski.
Just to make sure I understand, to use the 89 motor I need to bring with it the PCM and sensors and such, and suffer the performance of the older motor.
Or, could I not just use the bottom end of the 89 since that's where the problem is in the 96?
