I use Motorcraft 10w-30 every 5000 miles. Since I change often, to prevent a lot of soot in the oil, I don't see the rationale for the more expensive synthetic.

I tow a trailer that is 11K GVWR over mountain passes here in Colorado. My oil hit 243 degrees the last time I was out. Could dino oil handle that temperature for an extended period of time, many times between oil changes? Maybe, but I think the synthetic can handle it far better. That's why I'll be using synthetic. I used to use synthetic because of the extended oil change interval. Now, it's just to handle the punishment.
If your truck doesn't see severe service then by all means go dino oil. There is no reason to spend the extra money for synthetic.
I tow a trailer that is about 14,500 pounds about 10,000 miles a year, through all terrains and heats. I don't go to cold weather. Last summer, I was in your neck of the woods--Colorado Springs and La Veta, as well as Estes Park, Little Big Horn, Rapid City, SD, and other places.
My Ford dealer says this is the oil to use. I told him I wanted 10w-40, but he said that I should stay with the 10w-30. I haven't seen the oil temp go quite as high as yours, though. The only problem I've had with altitude and heat has been with the DPF (diesel particulate filter), but that was taken care of with a software upgrade.
Who knows what is adequate and what is overkill? I guess we'll see in the long run. I ran a Duramax for 150,000 miles on Rotella 15w-40 (dino) and never had a problem with it. I changed it, too, every 5000 miles.
I just picked up a 2017 6.7 Lariat. I have done UOA on my vehicles for the past 10 years. Very much looking forward to pulling the first oil from this engine and seeing what the results are. Probably changing it at 2,500 miles. Going to use AMSOIL Signature Series 5w40 for the first oil change.
I am going to go with Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w-40 oil, and use a stock Motorcraft 2051S filter. Cool?
yes, very cool. That is the set up a lot of us Rotella t6 guys are doing since t6 does not have the CK blessing from Ford yet. Make sure it is the premium blue EXTREME meeting Ford's new in house spec
That's it. It should have "meets ford spec wss-m2c171-f1" on the back of the bottle. If the new bottles don't have it, it is on the list of Ford approved oils.
The list is on my phone, I can't seem to copy it here, if you search this site for CK oils meeting Ford approved spec, it's been posted here a few times.
I've had a ton of success with Amsoil. This oil says it meets Fords new spec. My plan is to run it 5000 miles and then do another oil analysis. My guess is it will work out pretty good.
Whatever you choose be sure of 2 things 1) it's on the Ford approved list and 2) it's fully synthetic. Any questions on it being dino or synthetic spend a few hours reading this -- http://motoroilbible.com/free-mob.pdf - gotta get past the dudes disclaimers but once you get into the meat of the report you'll have a fairly decent understanding of oil and will be comfortable with whatever choice you make
