I have an 89 f150 4.9 standard 5 speed that has been challenging me and other journeymen for 2 years. I had codes 81 82 84 (self test) 53 (continuous) since I purchased it. I've done a lot of work and replaced a lot of parts chasing. Hopefully this will save you time and money.
one of the first parts I replaced was the *TPS since it didn't pass the tests. I adjusted to .96 according to so many forums that I've read.
It it still ran horrible, bucking as I was accelerating and flashing the CEL. The light never stayed on but just flashed. I ran codes and every time 81 82 84 (self test) 53 (continuous)
i finally checked an Internet site we use at work, ALL DATA PRO for their stats of what my sensor should be at idle and at WOT and what a difference.
0.2v & 4.0v
thats right, big difference. So I drilled out a spacing on my TPS to adjust down to that voltage. Started up the truck, but the CEL came on and the truck idled very rough. Adjusted the idle screw to slightly increase throttle and BAM, no more light.
reset computer, went for road test. And did I ever celebrate. No more CEL at WOT up big hills. No more bucking, nothing but smoothness.
I'll double check the numbers again, but since I adjusted down to .2v, I just wanna cruise around.
i went out the highway today to test the ol' gals limits.
on our biggest uphill, I was able to pass another vehicle with no problems. Accerlation and power going uphill...still amazes me.
