I have a 9" rear end in my 78 f150 and it needs rebuilt. It doesn't have the tag. The only things I could get was 0678 and d2sw-c. I'm trying to figure out what it is before I tear it apart so I can order parts. Thank you for the help!
What are you trying to get? A 9" is a 9" for the most part.
Most likely has the 2.89" carrier bearings.
leaked all the fluid. Ran dry. Metal shavings in it when I went to put fluid in it. I'm guessing the gears are worn. I'm pretty sure it's the 28 spline. Trying to figure out if it's posi/non posi, and what different diffs came in them
99% chance it's a open diff. Now would be a good time to add a limited slip if you want. New gears are cheap. Perfect time to change ratios if you want. The bearing kits are pretty cheap, and come with everything needed.
You can build an all new center section for less than $500. Or go wild and spend $1500. Its up to you.

AXLE code stamped on the 2nd line-far right of the Warranty Plate, riveted to the left door face below the latch.
If the AXLE code begins with a letter: Limited Slip. If it begins with a number: No Limited Slip.
1973/79 F100 & 1975/79 F150 could have 28 or 31 spline 9" axle shafts.
Without the ID tag, it's impossible to know if it has 28 or 31 splines. 1974/79: There are also two different types of axle bearings.
But...make sure your truck has a 9 inch, because some 1976/79 F100/150's came with Dana 44-3 rear axles.
I have a good set of 31 spline axles and a matching good condition open carrier with spider gears if interested. All for $100+ shipping. You'd just need gears and an install kit. Parts are from a '77 F150 4x4.
Shipping the axles wouldn't be the easiest but maybe I could figure something out. Parts are in Arizona.
