Hello,
I have a problem with my 1988 F150 351W. In the mornings, or after sitting for a few hours it starts great. But if I drive it up to operating temp, turn it off and go into a store, then come out the starter has issues. The starter motor spins, but the gear will not flip out and engage with the flywheel. I have inspected the flywheel and there ar NO teeth missing. Someone told me it's not the starter, but that it's the relay.
What do you guys think?
Thanks!
First of all is the starter solenoid making any noise?
If isn’t, its your starter. You can have it rebuilt or you can buy a new one I’m not sure what the prices are but check them out.
I think the problem is something called heat wash. It was very prodomenent on older chavies(go figure). I am at work right now but when I go home and get some sleep I will start reading through my pile of 4x4 mags to see what I can find on how to cure it. I read it lately so hopefully it won't take to long to find.
Thanks for the help guys! There is no clicking or any other noise form the relay. My thought was that if it was the relay, it wouldn't even turn the starter motor at all. After a few attempts it always starts, but it sure gets embarrasing while everyones staring at you!
Thanks again!
