Looking for advise on purchasing a 74 f250 crew cab. It was a project of another guy who decided to not finish the build. It is on a completed rolling chassis, cab on the frame but not secure. It comes with misc parts, rebuilt 390 no specs on motor, and the auto c6 short tail transmission. I have been looking for a crew cab since my family has out grown the regular cab, but not sure of. It has rust and holes in some areas but really sound body. The cab was never disassembled and is how it was when he started. Original glass, seats, and all in good condition. Not real sure where to find the parts I am going to or may need to complete build. I am not looking for show room truck build but rather a good looking daily driver. I have a few parts trucks in the pasture for parts on my regular cabs and I use LMC for other part, but haven't seen much for crew cabs. I have two weeks to finalize the purchase or walk away. I have five of these f series trucks so I know them well, and like the way they look and drive.
I recall seeing the ad for that truck before I bought my 86 f250 2 months ago. It's near Dallas, TX isn't it?
As I recall, I never went to see it because the price seemed high for a project in the works. Plus, it didn't have a diesel in it. I did like it that it was a crew cab and has 4x4.
Since the crew cab trucks are so rare you would be hard pressed to find things like rear glass and doors. Hopefully you are a good body man. If the truck has rust in the corners or in the doors you might have to fabricate some panels.
One good thing about the crew cab trucks is that they are so desirable now. Chances are you could buy it, put it in a garage for 5 - 8 years and sell it for a profit without having done anything to it. The bad part is that they are so few and far between.
When I bought my 86 f250 there was a diesel crew cab 4x4 in Corpus Christi, TX and a diesel crew cab 4x4 in Montana, both Bricknoses. Those were the closest to me! Besides that crew cab there were maybe 5 or 6 others (non-diesel, crew cabs) within 750 miles of me. Good luck in your search for a truck.
Yes it has the notorious rusting above the doors and holes in the floor boards but nothing that can't be fixed. Yes it's in Carrollton tx just north of dallas. It is a bit more than I wanted to spend but everytime I find one that is running and driving they sell before I can get to them. I was able to talk to the seller and worked out the price more and he came down from original price so guess it's time to fish or cut bait. I had found one in Montana and West Virginia that I wanted but never heard back from the sellers. Kinda curious about the caps and hoses on each side at the bottom of each front fender after the tires. Don't know what they are for.

That's awesome. Hopefully you can get it even cheaper if you show up to haggle with cash.
I was wondering about the "caps" on the bottom of the fenders as well. They sort of look like fuel filler caps. Maybe the owner was planning on running side pipes out the holes and then had second thoughts...

Someone had put in aftermarket or custom fuel tanks. They were kind of thin running under the outside of the cab, outside the frame.
You would be starting off with a project much further along than mine was when I got it, so I say go for it. Check out my build thread in my sig to see details if you are interested.
Even unfinished, the truck is definately a conversation starter since many do not even know these trucks exist.
Just keep in mind that you will spend more money and time than you can now imagine
I also remember seeing this truck for sale. I thought the asking price was quite expensive. I feel like it was around the 13-15k mark but I may be wrong It looked like a pretty clean truck in pictures. Remember that some peoples projects start out in MUCH worse condition, so this looks like a great starting point.
As far as parts, only the crew-specific parts such as rear doors, door panels, etc are harder to find. The roof can be a pain, but with time they will all rot out, take some time to replace it and you will be happy with how it comes out.
Is it an AC truck? Is the bed there? Any idea if its a factory 4x4 or conversion? Short or long bed? If you get it keep us updated, I like the color on it too. Would be a fun project, time will make the final product well worth it
I stopped by today to take some pictures for a couple of buddies and to answer some of the questions I have. It seems to be factory 4x4 with larger axels and gear box than my 77 high boy, but this is also a much bigger truck. Cabs in good shape and the two spots in floor board that are rusted will be pretty easy repairs. Most of the cancer is around the top of the cab and one spot around back of cab. It also seems to have had cruise control. Those are gas caps at the bottom of fenders and there were three tanks on this truck and pipped together for long distance driving or for less trips to the gas station. What's one more ford truck project. The motor is fresh rebuild and waiting to find engine specs. Tranny is overhauled and has new converter. Still haven't seen the bed but think I am gonna go ahead and get her. The frame work is done and now it's body work paint and motor.
Passenger front new brake line
It's a different type of steering than the gear boxes I am used too.
Rust under back window
I like that the floor is taller than most cars front end.
Think this is part of cruise control. Not sure if it's factory or not.
Here is the switch for the cruise control.
This is the number of transfer case. The metal tage is unreadable.
Found this in the corner and just wanted to share and see who knows what it is.
Looks like NONE factory, but dealership installed cruise control.
What is the xfer case shift pattern? In that pic it looks like a NP-203 with the large output are? You can see the NP (New-Process) inside the gear ring on the housing below the #'s.
Looks like a flathead inline engine, but I can't tell how many cylinders. At first I thought four, but now I think it's eight. Looks like the timing pointer is on the bottom, or is that it coming out of the timing cover. Someone here knows.
