From personal experience, I would never go cheap with ANYTHING related to heavy towing.

. Byron, It’s not cheap as in junk but it’s the cheaper option of the options available. The bolt down rails that most use in their trucks are about $180 but they’re also permanent in the truck bed, which I’m not really a fan. The Curt adapter, on the other hand, is just basically removable rails that connects via the B+W Gooseneck hitch already installed but it also costs $500. I’ll probably just bite the bullet and buy the Curt but I need to bitch a bit more about the cost. I’m also considering fabricating my own set of removable rails.

John, have you looked at the Draw Tite adapter since you already have a B&W? That is what I have for my 5th wheel. Yes, they are $$$. I got mine used and it was $500. Is the Curt the same idea?

Im learn'n with these 5th rail setups but, if you already have the gn instalked, why not invest in an adaptor for the trailer? You'd lighten your truck "payload"

. Yeah, same principle, I think, the rails connect to the gooseneck mount on truck then attach your fifth wheel to hitch rails. I’ll take a look at what draw Tire has for an adapter. Thanks Can you post up a picture?

. With a fifth wheel camper using a gooseneck attachment puts extra leverage on the front of the camper and can cause additional stress to the frame of the camper. I have a F350 Dually so I’m not concerned as much about the truck payload...

Not sure if this helps. I can get one of my actual hitch when I get back to the house later today.

I see what you have now, the pictures I posted, the first one with the red attachment actually is the fifth wheel hitch by Andersen. The red adapter gets attached to the camper and then you have more of a gooseneck attachment which provides more turning radius and a smoother transition without the clunking of a fifth wheel plate like you have in your pictures. I just need to figure out how I’m going to attach the Andersen hitch to the truck. Andersen actually make one that just drops down into the gooseneck ball but for what I paid for what I have I can buy the rails and still come out ahead. The Curt X5 basically drops into the gooseneck on the truck, you secure it with the pin underneath and then just put that Anderson hitch on the rails and you’re ready to go. B+W makes a fifth wheel companion hitch that has the same principle of yours. However, it weighs 206 pounds and even used they’re running about $900.

John, I can offer no advice or suggestions about which mount you should get, but I can tell you that the AUH is great. We have thousands of miles logged with our AUH and it has been flawless.

Hook up and detachment are quick and easy. Great choice.

Picked up a trailer for a friend today. First time towing something heavy with the truck since I got the Hydra. I use the PHP 45 towing tune and was extremely pleased with how the truck pulled today. The EGT’s were around 1000* even going up grades with OD left on.

Since purchasing my Hydra from Gear Head years ago, I have never even tried the PHP tunes that came with it. When life slows down a bit, I might have to give PHP a shot.

I know you had some issues with the 1023 tunes, but I swapped to them just before installing the SXE and was very impressed at how well the truck ran. Even with a modified stock turbo, it held it's own in 5th gear where ith GH I would have to downshift to 4th.

I remember reading in the 5th wheel/gooseneck section about that particular 5th wheel hitch John posted, or it could of even been here in this section I dont remember, where the hitch bend after a hard braking scenario or something to that degree. I see if I can dig it up.

I saw that as well, but also seem to remember some details about the story that didn't add up, was a while ago though.

I can tell you I much prefer the steel rail mount design over the aluminum goose neck design. The guy that bought our Montana trailer had the goose neck version and I just didn't care for it.

On a side note, Adam, when are you coming out with more videos? The first one had us cracking up.

Adam, I remember seen that thread, I don’t remember everything but something else was involved besides hard braking. The guy I bought it from towed a 12k 5er with it and had zero issues and had a Curt before switching to the Andersen. While traveling I ran into a guy towing a 16K tow hauler with a Dodge 5500 with the Aluminum version that hooked directly to his gooseneck hitch that was parked in a mall lot. I knocked on the RV door and asked him about it and his opinion. He was a full time RVer after retiring from Wall Street. He’s had absolutely no problems or issues with the Andersen hitch over thousands of miles. We talked for almost two hours about everything from the Andersen to Life etc, he even made us lunch while we talked, very cool guy. If he can pull 16K with the Andersen across the Country without issues then I feel very comfortable using it.
