I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but here goes. My project continues to take on a life of its own after seeing other's builds. I'm contemplating matching up an E4OD to my 400 for highway drivability. I am currently planning on 3.73 gears so thought the OD trans would help cruising down the highway. Anyway, I can't seem to find much info on whether this will work. I know I have to get the aftermarket electronic controller, which is expensive.
Has anyone done this? Will the C6 bell housing work, or do I need a modified bell housing for an E4OD? Can the E4OD be built to handle my torque goal of 500 lb/ft? I presume a stock E4OD cannot handle that power.
Are there any other suggested OD transmissions to mate with the 400?
You do know that both the C6 and E4OD do not have removable bellhousings, right?
I don't know what bellhousing pattern a 400 has. If it is the same as a 460 you can use an E4OD from a 460.
The E4OD can be built to handle 500 lb-ft.
I did not know that...I haven't pulled my 400/c6 combo yet. Thanks for the info. I believe the 400/460 have matching bellhousing pattern so I can search for one of those.
I'm doing the same thing, and my 400 peaked at 500 ft-lbs on Tim's dyno. But I haven't chosen the E4OD yet, so will follow this thread.
However, I am concerned that the flywheel on a 400 is about 3/8" further forward than the one on a 460. That means the torque converter will slide forward on the splines that much, and there may not be full engagement with the splines. But Tim sells a spacer that moves the 400's flywheel back to the 460's position, and I am planning to run it. And, with that a 469's starter can be used.
